Who you'll meet

Bios below are spoiler-free by default. Each one has a "Reveal spoiler arc" button if you want to know where a character ends up — open only the ones you're ready for.

Angus Archard

Prayist · Protagonist

A towering, dark-haired prayist — one of the damned few tasked with harvesting human souls for the coming war between Order and Entropy. Unique among his kind, Angus carries burdens for both sides at once, forcing him into a precarious, ongoing balancing act just to survive. Known instantly on sight by his black cassock, wide-brimmed hat, and a clerical collar he wears more as disguise than faith. A veteran of the pre-apocalypse Climate Wars, Godless by conviction, and weighed down by guilt — over the cause he left his family for, and over how little his killing costs him now — he is searching for Ella, the daughter he lost contact with when the world ended.

Ella — "Beth"

Field Medic · Angus's Daughter

Raised under the name Beth by her adoptive mentors after the Cataclysms, Ella has no real memory of her father beyond a single photograph, and grew up believing he died in military service. She now works as a field medic in a dangerous frontier region, and holds a deep, principled opposition to prayists and everything they represent: she heals, they take.

The Messenger

Intermediary · Antagonist

A mysterious, shapeshifting figure who delivers assignments to prayists on behalf of an unseen higher power. The Messenger always tells the truth — and wields it as a tool of manipulation more effective than any lie. He calls Angus "Archie" purely to needle him. His true motives and degree of villainy are left deliberately uncertain.

Catherine of Ardanes

Prayist

A prayist known for severe but fair judgments, introduced delivering a fateful ruling in a struggling community. One of the few fellow prayists Angus actually trusted. Struck down under mysterious circumstances shortly after uncovering information relevant to Angus's search for his daughter.

Morgan le Fay

Rival Prayist

A powerful, territorial prayist referenced only in dialogue so far — her domain is said to rival Angus's own in size. She has yet to appear on the page.
