Long before the story begins, the goddess Etheria forges the Onestone, her most ambitious creation, drawing on Essence obtained through a bargain with a rival god, Syn. The stone shatters catastrophically, destroying the world's unity and reshaping it into the fractured land of Prism, where humanity is now divided into color-coded castes. Below all of them are the Calico — outcasts born of forbidden unions between castes, considered without value and without Essence. The god Herald, flung through the wreckage of the shattering, is grievously wounded and haunted by a vision of a "Banded Man" and a prophecy of a coming child "begotten of tainted purity" who will end the castes' separation.
Fifteen years later, in the Calico settlement of Ethni, Hue — a Calico boy secretly gifted with Essence "sight" by his mentor, the old wanderer Gaunt Wheeling (who is, unknown to nearly everyone, Herald himself in disguise) — is attacked by a hellfur, a beast drawn to Essence. Gaunt kills it, but the confrontation exposes two secrets: the protective wards around Ethni are failing, and Gaunt made Hue an "abomination" by giving a Calico the ability to bear Essence at all. Political talks in the city of Lineage have also collapsed — guildmasters are refusing to swear a "Trustoath" to the ruling Avataran, and a boy elsewhere carries a stone fragment that must never reach Lineage. Gaunt sends Hue, along with his friend Satch and the walker/guide Torren Kiter, to Northshore to retrieve that boy and his fragment before the Avataran or worse can find it.
In Northshore, that boy is revealed to be Azaleus Asphodel — Hue's half-brother, unknowingly, son of Bog Asphodel, Guildmaster of the Botanist guild, and (though Azaleus doesn't know it) half-brother by Bog's affair with a Functionary woman years earlier. Azaleus has just undergone a spectacular, uncontrolled "raising" as an adept, marking him as extraordinarily powerful, and carries what looks like a lucky trinket — a woodstone — which is in fact the missing Onestone fragment. Azaleus is pursued by Chartreuse Haustus, who loves him, and is drawn into the orbit of Solareana Iridess, the Elite princess and heir to the Overlord's throne, who is secretly married to a Blooddread named Rogant and travels in disguise. When Azaleus loses control of his Essence in a public accident, he's arrested; Solareana, intrigued and sympathetic, begins investigating him, aided by her Functionary friend Melody (a "Reader") and the Blooddread Wolfram.
In Lineage's political undercurrent, Bog Asphodel is targeted by Dreadlord Battalia and the scheming Archfanatical Ardent Ebaun's ally Rogant over the guilds' refusal of the Trustoath; a secret plan is floated to force a "Turning" onto Bog against his will as leverage. When the ritual is forced through, Battalia intervenes and blood-bonds with Bog to save his life, an unprecedented and incomplete bond that leaves him transformed: his skin becomes a strange, casteless color, unlike anything seen before, and he's stripped of his guildmastership.
Meanwhile Azaleus escapes custody with help smuggled in by allies, and flees toward the mountain pass called Fallen Heights with Torren's group, still carrying the stone. Solareana, Melody, and Wolfram pursue him and catch up on a collapsing mountain trail; a landslide sweeps away Wolfram, Melody, and Torren (all later found to have survived), leaving Solareana stranded with Hue's group. During the chaos, Hue's own latent Essence power first fully manifests in a battle against hellfur and lurks, and it's revealed that Lisere, the innkeeper's daughter who befriended the group earlier, is a corrupted servant of the god Ureal/Syn.
Back in Lineage, the god Syn is revealed working directly through Ardent Ebaun, orchestrating a plot to poison Overlord Theol Iridess via an enchanted teapot, clearing the way for Rogant to be installed as the new Overlord under Ardent's control. Bog, now bonded to Battalia, senses Theol's poisoning happening from afar. The wider group, reunited, flees toward Ethni, only to find it under lockdown by the Followers, with Gaunt under house arrest, and a "deman" and vile hordes massing outside.
The story's darkest turn comes at the Blowingoak Inn: needing to safely deal with the Onestone fragment now that Azaleus is gravely injured and can't master it, Gaunt manipulates Hue into stabbing Azaleus with a strange dagger (the scrii knife) while Hue is holding the fragment. Azaleus dies instantly — the fragment, Gaunt explains, can only be freely given by its possessor, never taken by force, and using it against Azaleus's will killed him. Wracked with grief and guilt, Hue is told the stone is now his. The Onestone fragment's true predator, Ureal, attacks the inn directly through its servant Lisere; Gaunt holds the line with a magical shield so the others can escape through the sewers, flushing out into Grayhl Lake, where they reunite with Wolfram and Melody. Fleeing toward Fallen Heights, they're captured by a rival Blooddread horde loyal to the rebel commander Spar. Solareana brokers a bargain: Torren and Callin Vesper will guide Spar's rebel forces into the Lineage palace through secret tunnels in exchange for Hue and Satch's freedom and the return of the fragment and knife.
In Lineage, Ardent and Rogant finalize plans for that night's "transference" ritual, intending to seize control of the Dreadguard. Solareana convinces Hue to guide her, Melody, Chartreuse, and Wolfram into the palace through the same hidden tunnel network so she can be near her dying father. Along the way they free the imprisoned Functionary Dal Mandala and the transformed Bog Asphodel, and rescue the tortured Dreadlord Battalia, learning that Rogant's ascension is being forced through a corrupted use of the Trustoath.
The group reaches the Great Hall in time to find it a battlefield: Spar's rebel Blooddread horde fighting loyalist Followers Guard for control of the palace. Hue's time-slowing power fully activates, letting him move through the frozen battlefield disarming enemies and repositioning allies' weapons to save Torren and Callin — but when time resumes, Torren's already-committed sword stroke runs Hue through the shoulder instead of an enemy, gravely wounding him.
Partially healed, Hue is then psychically compelled by a mysterious, oily-voiced Stranger — revealed as an incorporeal, god-like entity (the true face of Ureal/Syn's influence) who has manipulated events throughout, including deceiving Ardent — to bring him the fragment during the ongoing "transference" ritual. Hue refuses despite torment and the Stranger's manipulation over the impending deaths of Ardent and Theol. When Bog spears Ardent to stop the ritual, both Ardent and Theol die in the resulting Essence discharge; the fragment flares to life on its own, absorbing the released power and wounding the Stranger, revealing he can be harmed. Newly empowered, Hue kills the Stranger with Ardent's own spear, seemingly destroying or banishing the entity — but at the cost of Theol's life, leaving Solareana fatherless and grieving, and Rogant standing over his own dead father. Unable to face Solareana, Hue flees.
In the epilogue, months later, Hue and Satch are working off a "fair trade debt" as deckhands aboard the Mariner ship Galeswind, having escaped Lineage the night of the battle using Callin's name. Rumors trickle in from port to port about Lineage's fractured aftermath — Solareana and Rogant's uncertain rule, Bog's Turning, an ongoing Blooddread civil war, vile besieging the city — but nothing is ever said of the Calico or of Ethni's destruction; their part in it all has been erased from history. Hue, forever changed and newly, dangerously powerful, mourns Gaunt and his lost home, thinks constantly of Solareana, and resolves that one day he will have the answers he has paid for in blood.

The Stranger (the true face of Ureal/Syn) confronts Hue directly, demanding the fragment. Ardent and Theol both die in the climactic ritual collision; the fragment awakens and empowers Hue to seemingly destroy the Stranger, at the cost of Theol's life.
Months later, Hue and Satch work as sailors aboard the Galeswind, having fled Lineage; rumors of the aftermath filter in, but the Calico and Ethni are forgotten by history. Hue resolves to seek the truth about the stone and his destiny.
Identity and belonging anchors the book through Hue's struggle as a Calico "abomination" who belongs fully to no caste, echoed by Azaleus's uncontrolled "raising" and Bog's post-Turning transformation into something the world has no category for. Prejudice and caste hierarchy run through nearly every scene, with Calico cast as the lowest, "worthless" tier of a world explicitly organized by color. The cost of power is a constant thread — every use of Hue's growing Essence abilities saves someone at a terrible price (Azaleus's death, Torren's accidental wounding of Hue, Theol's death). Manipulation versus free will becomes a structural engine: the rule that a fragment can only be freely given, never taken, forces nearly every major character into coercion, bonding, or manipulated choice. And beneath all of it sits grief, guilt, and the erasure of the marginalized — the epilogue's quiet gut-punch that history records nothing of the Calico or of Ethni, even after everything they gave.
Tone: mythic, melancholic, morally complex, brutal, bittersweet.
