Raised in the hidden Calico settlement of Ethni, Hue has spent his life being told he is worth nothing — until his mentor's forbidden gift and a fragment of a broken god-stone say otherwise. Sent out into the wider world on what should be a simple errand, he finds far more than he bargained for.
Hue discovers an unknown half-brother in Azaleus Asphodel, and is manipulated by Gaunt into fatally stabbing him to break the Onestone fragment's hold — inheriting the fragment, and a lifetime of guilt, in the process. Over the course of the book his Essence abilities awaken fully (sight, time-slowing, channeling), and he uses them to save allies during the palace's climactic battle, ultimately confronting and seemingly destroying the god-entity Ureal/Syn at the cost of Overlord Theol's life. He ends the book exiled from his destroyed home, grieving Gaunt, and working anonymously aboard a Mariner ship.
Son of the Botanist guildmaster Bog Asphodel, Azaleus comes into a terrifying, uncontrollable power right as a fragment of the Onestone finds its way into his hands, disguised as a lucky trinket.
Azaleus is revealed to be Hue's unknowing half-brother. After his arrest, escape, and pursuit across the Fallen Heights, he is fatally stabbed by Hue at Gaunt's insistence — the only way, Gaunt claims, to break the Onestone fragment's hold on him once his grip on it turns involuntary. His death is the emotional center of the book and the source of Hue's defining guilt.
Leader of the Botanist guild, stationed in Lineage, and father to Azaleus. A steady, respected voice among the guilds during a season of political unrest.
Bog is secretly Hue's biological father as well, through an earlier affair with a Functionary woman who was executed for it. Targeted by the Elite over the guilds' refusal to swear the Trustoath, he's forced through a Turning ritual and survives only because Dreadlord Battalia force-bonds with him — an unprecedented act that leaves him transformed into an entirely new, casteless color and stripped of his guildmastership. He later kills the Archfanatical Ardent Ebaun during the book's climax, indirectly causing Overlord Theol's death as well.
An aging traveler with the Nomadii, teaching Hue to see currents of Essence no Calico should ever touch. He knows far more about the Onestone, the prophecies, and the world's true history than he ever lets on.
Gaunt Wheeling is secretly Herald, one of the Nine of Light, in disguise. He orchestrates much of the book's plot toward what he believes is the only way to protect the Onestone fragment and the world from Syn — including manipulating Hue into killing Azaleus. He dies (or is presumed dead) defending the Blowingoak Inn and Ethni against a direct assault by Syn's agent Ureal, sacrificing himself so the others can escape.
Heir to the Overlord's throne, and carrying secrets of her own, Solareana is drawn into Hue's path by a case she can't leave alone — and a father she's desperate to protect.
Solareana is secretly married to the Blooddread Rogant. She repeatedly bargains with Hue's group — trading freedom, tunnel access, and information — to reach her poisoned father before the succession can be stolen out from under her. She loses Theol in the climactic ritual and ends the book facing an uncertain, fractured succession alongside Rogant.
Ruler of all Prism and Solareana's father, presiding over a season of guild unrest and political maneuvering he doesn't fully see coming.
Theol is poisoned by Archfanatical Ardent Ebaun as part of a plot to install Ardent's son Rogant as a puppet Overlord. He dies during the climactic "transference" ritual when his Essence is violently drained.
Head of the Elite church, and traditionally next in line to rule should the Overlord's line fail — a fact that weighs on everything he does.
Ardent is secretly an agent of the god Syn, and orchestrates Theol's poisoning to install his own son Rogant as a controlled successor. He's killed by Bog Asphodel's spear during the climactic ritual — an act that also releases a burst of Essence that empowers the Onestone fragment in Hue's hands.
Bonded to Solareana in secret, and being groomed by his father Ardent for a future none of them have been honest with each other about.
Rogant is being positioned by Ardent to become Overlord through a corrupted use of the Trustoath. Privately resentful of being used, he's left stunned and orphaned after Ardent's death in the climax, his own future — and his marriage to Solareana — thrown into question.
Leader of the Blooddread nation and bonded to Overlord Theol — a position of honor she carries with unusual independence of thought.
Battalia saves Bog Asphodel's life mid-Turning by force-bonding with him — an unprecedented, incomplete bond. Later arrested and tortured under a new Fanatical Edict, she's freed by Hue's group and leads the Blooddread counter-assault during the palace's climactic battle.
A scarred, pragmatic guide sent by Gaunt to escort Hue and Satch to Northshore — skilled, loyal, and no stranger to violence.
Torren survives the mountain landslide that splits the group and later fights through the Great Hall battle. During Hue's time-slowed rescue of allies, Torren's already-committed sword stroke ends up wounding Hue instead of an enemy.
Son of the Blowingoak Inn's keepers, Satch accompanies Hue throughout the journey out of loyalty as much as safety.
Satch develops a mutual attraction with Chartreuse Haustus over the course of the journey, and joins Hue in fleeing Lineage at the book's end to work off passage aboard the Mariner ship Galeswind.
A young Botanist woman with an eye for Azaleus, drawn into Hue's group's orbit by circumstance and stays for reasons that surprise her.
After Azaleus's death, Chartreuse becomes a loyal member of the fleeing group and forms a mutual bond with Satch.
A close friend to Solareana with a Reader's gift, accompanying her through danger she'd honestly rather avoid.
Melody's Essence-healing saves Hue's life after his sword wound in the Great Hall, and she survives the mountain landslide alongside Wolfram and Torren.
Loyal and protective, if reluctant to place his princess in danger — a reluctance the plot never quite lets him indulge.
Wolfram survives the landslide separating the group and fights through the Great Hall battle at Solareana's side to the end.
